The Matthew Shephard Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, which passed the House and is currently under consideration by the Senate Judiciary Committee, is a deeply obnoxious piece of legislation that would lead to preferential treatment of non-white criminals and victims. The bill would enable the federal government to involve itself in the prosecution of hate crimes if it finds states are insufficiently zealous in doing so. Attorney General Eric Holder made clear in a recent hearing that Justice Department staff would not prosecute hate crimes equally. Only crimes against protected groups, like blacks, Jews, and homosexuals, would receive attention from the US government. I urge you to send the model email in my new activism campaign, or one of your own composition, to your Senator to prevent this legislation from being passed.
